High Speed Photography

DrewH on Jun 21st 2009

I don’t know what to call this exactly.. high speed photography or motion capture.  I’m waffling back and forth.  I need to use a faster shutter speed, but then, I need more light on the rink.  If you’ve ever watch Time Warp on Discovery Channel, no matter where they are set up, they always bring more light with them.

Anyway, Celeste has been taking two figure skating classes lately.  Her first class is lessons and then the second class is conditioning.  She skates around constantly for half an hour to some really good music selections, practicing the movements she has learned.  It’s a really good compliment to the learning class.  I took Celeste to this class last Thursday and took along my camera and long lens.  I will say, even as bright as the rink is, it needed more light.  I did snap a series of images of another student practicing some spins and jumps.  I’ve compiled the images into a series like a time lapse movie.

Next time, I need to use a faster shutter speed and grab every image I can until the camera just quits on me.  The series was 17 images shot in succession, but even at a frame rate of 1/6th of a second (movies run at 1/24th), there isn’t a lot of movie.  What really suprised me though in reviewing the movie is that it appears (to my untrained eye) that the skater goes into the spin one direction and then reverses the spin by the time she stops. I’m going to have to ask how that is done.
